As an introduction, I will first provide a definition of the ‘gun show loophole‘. The gun show loophole, as defined by Wikipedia is:
“…a political term in the United States referring to sales of firearms by private sellers, including those done at gun shows, dubbed the “secondary market”.The term refers to the viewpoint that there is an inadequacy in federal law, under which “any person may sell a firearm to an unlicensed resident of the State where he resides as long as he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms”.”
On January 27, 2016, American comedian Steven Crowder published a video on YouTube titled “HIDDEN CAM: ‘Gun Show Loophole’ Exposed!” where Crowder tested the claims of politicians celebrities on how easy it is to acquire a fully automatic weapon by coming into gun shows and firearms dealers. It has acquired, in the time of this writing, 1,187,368 views on YouTube alone. It has been shared thousands of times in social media handles such as Facebook by different pages.
He scouted different firearms dealers and owners in their shops and stalls in gun shows where he asked if he can purchase a fully automatic firearm without background checks. Every single one of them denied him a purchase because, as one man quoted, that it is a felony and can land him 20 years in prison. Since he is a comedian, there was this scene where he rushed inside a store and asked if he can buy a weapon without a background check. The dealers out the counter said ‘No.’ and he yelled violently, “son of a b***h!” There also was this instance where he filled up a background check form and as he finished and showed it to the dealer, the dealer noticed and told him that “this is a penis.”
The little experiment was conducted on the state of Indiana and the state, like most others, do not necessarily require a background check on gun shows however, it is required that licensed dealers conduct checks on those who want to purchase a firearm.
